Shimano RS710 Wheels

1 results

The Shimano RS710 wheelset represents the Japanese brand’s most affordable carbon wheelset ever. Though these wheels don’t bear the 105 badge, they were released to coincide with the launch of the hotly anticipated 105 Di2 groupset. The timing was no coincidence, this latest wheelset carries many of the same traits as Shimano’s most popular component range. For example, like 105, Shimano say these wheels benefit from the trickle-down technology process commonly seen in the brand’s products. For instance, they’ve been developed and built in much the same fashion as the more premium Dura-Ace and Ultegra models, they differ only in some of the detailing and processes used, which helps to keep the cost down.

Modern, Wider, Deeper Wheelset

Shimano’s RS710 wheelset is available in two models: the C32, which is shallower and lighter weight; and the C46, which has a deeper-rim profile, but is heavier. As the names suggest the wheels are 32mm and 46mm in depth, respectively. For the climbers among you, or if live in a particularly windy location and out-and-out speed isn’t a primary concern, then the C32 is the wheel for you. If you are purely concerned with maximum speed, be that in fast group rides or races, then the C46 has the edge.

The RS710 wheelset also boasts a wider rim profile, which brings a wider, performance-oriented wheel to a new price point for Shimano—on both options the internal rim width is 21mm and the external rim width is 28mm.

It seems that it wasn’t that long ago that wheel makers were purely looking to add more and more depth to their wheels but modern wheel makers are increasingly adding width to their rims. Wider rims offer a number of benefits. For one, they make it possible to fit a wider tyre; a wider tyre can be ran at lower pressures, making them roll smoother and provide a more comfortable ride. Not only that, wider tyres also offer lower rolling resistance and a cut a cleaner line through the air, making them faster all round.

Tubeless And Disc Brakes

The RS710 are designed for tubeless tyres and disc brakes. The benefits of both have been well told by now. But in short, with Shimano’s latest R7150 disc brakes you’ll have excellent stopping power, rain or shine. Compatible with either 11-speed or 12-speed, whether you combine these with Shimano’s latest 12-speed groupset or make use of an existing setup, it’s no problem at all.
